  • A mother agent—often called a "mother agency"—is the primary agency that signs a talent early in their career. They nurture and develop the talent’s portfolio, skills, and brand identity. Once the talent has gained experience and built a strong portfolio, the mother agency leverages its industry relationships to submit the talent to agencies in key markets. The mother agency acts as both a mentor and gatekeeper, guiding the talent’s career while protecting their interests as they navigate the competitive world of fashion.

  • Talent earns money by booking jobs—such as fashion shows, photo shoots, commercials, and brand campaigns—and receiving a fee for their time and usage rights. Here’s a quick breakdown:

    1. Day Rate or Session Fee

      • Talent are paid a set amount for each day (or half-day) they work, whether it’s for a runway show, editorial shoot, or commercial production.

    2. Usage or Licensing Fees

      • Beyond the day rate, brands may pay additional fees based on how and where the final images or videos are used (e.g., print ads, billboards, digital campaigns). The broader the usage, the higher the fee.

    3. Residuals (for Commercial Work)

      • In some markets, especially television commercials, models can earn residual payments each time the ad airs or renews.

    4. Royalties (for Product Collaborations)

      • If a talent partners with a brand to create or promote a product line, they may receive a percentage of sales, known as royalties.

    5. Agency Commissions

      • Agencies typically take a percentage (often 10–20%) from each job as their commission. They also deduct expenses like portfolio updates or comp cards if those costs are advanced by the agency.

    6. Long-Term Contracts & Endorsements

      • Top-tier talent may secure brand ambassadorships or endorsement deals, earning lump-sum payments or annual retainers for exclusive rights to their image.
